Back when I was designing before, I would design a free pattern for each collection. This was just for publicity, and something that would go in the booth. They could be kitted up by shops, etc.
I, obviously, don’t mind making things for free when it makes sense, but it often left me feeling a little used up, especially when I had to make them and quilt them under such a time crunch... and to be fair, I didn’t have to design them, but I felt like I KNEW how the fabric was supposed to be used, and couldn’t let go of it. I would handle this differently now.
We’re learning. We’re growing.
As a note, I didn’t write these patterns, I just designed them and gave the pattern writer my notes. It wasn’t always written the same way I made it.
I’m actually thrilled to have these all in one place, because some of these, I LOVE!
Let me know if you’ve made any of these, or if you plan to!
Swatch Book Quilt (Printmaking)
This is a great quilt quick quilt to show off some of your favorite fabrics. Keep the panel whole or include up to 3 fabrics to show off even more fabrics.
Crayon Box Quilt (Pearl Bracelets)
This quilt is so much fun. I designed it a little different. A little more complicated. I might release that later, but this one is still pretty great. Use your favorite solids, or basics to make a crayon rainbow
Card Catalog Quilt (Natural History)
This simple quilt is one of my favorites! I keep this huge quilt on my bed. The way it weaves in and out of color is so fun. It’s a really easy quilt to make by utilizing strip sets that you sub cut. Because it’s big, it’s not super fast, but it’s worth it. Make it as big or small as you’d like. And be as fussy as you’d like about matching all those points. I’ve seen someone selling a pattern that looks shockingly similar to this, and since I designed this before they were likely born (just kidding, they were at least in high school when I designed this) just use the original pattern for free!
I’m going to remake this in Love Letter. You can use 2-3 Jelly rolls to make this quilt!
Trick of the Light Quilt (Catnap)
This is another quick quilt! Make it with a good range of patterned fabric, or make it a color study with solids.
Cross Gartered Quilt (Lovely Hunt)
If I were you, I would take the x blocks all the way to the edge of the quilt. Adding a row to the top, sides, and bottom, forgoing the border all together. I would also use a fabric in the background that is more of a blender/basic, so you aren’t decapitating unicorns.
You can make all the cross pieces with a jelly roll.
Something more like this:
BETTER! Looks very classic, and like it starts to get round? Is it doing that for you? If you squint at it also starts to look like a subway map. Fun!
Planetarium Quilt (Constellations)
This, like Marble Champ used a “6 minute circle”. The instructions are for machine applique. Use whatever method you prefer.
Marble Champ Quilt (Red Letter Day)
see note above!
Villagers Rejoice Quilt (Castle Peeps)
just a simple kind of silly kid quilt. Even though now that I type that, I know Magnolia would love a quilt like this.
Magic Carpet Quilt (1001 Peeps)
Again, make circles here in your preferred way.
I hope you have fun with these and will reference them, and share them with your friends, and guilds!
Coming up later this week! We’ll talk about the Meadow quilt
